Halo 4 - Forward Unto Dawn
Let's skip the banter and get right to it. What a good movie! No it isn't good the way Iron Man or Skyfall or really any other big budget action movie is. This movie must have been straight to DVD, and when I started it, I actually thought it was going to be an animated film. It isn't though. It is a live action piece of magic and for the budget, and my lowered expectations I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable.
The characters were well written, not just caricatures. I found myself actually rooting for the main hero of the story (and no, it isn't the Master Chief). He was a likable, intelligent and thoughtful cadet. Questioning the decision making of those would-be leaders around him and question the very morality of the war they would soon be entering. His supporting cast was just as good. The "villian" is annoying but not ridiculous. The love interest is sweet but not cheesy. And Master Chief, when it is his turn to shine, does nothing but smash faces.
The story is also very interesting. It, like all the Halo products, adds and connects to the contiguous continuum that is the Halo universe. More than working as just a historical narrative in Halo landscape, it is a self-contained story that has both emotional and thrilling parts. The way the Covenant is introduced is as exciting a part as any movie I have seen in the past three years.
Hands down, this movie is a must see. Get it for $1.30 at a Redbox, watch it for free on Netflix, whatever, just make it happen.
Do you agree? Did you like this movie? Or am I an idiot for thinking it was so good? Let me know with your comments below.
